SUMMARY
The public agora of Ephesus was situated between the hills Panayir Dağ and Bülbül Dağ and formed the administrative center of the city. It was originally constructed during the Hellenistic period, but it was fundamentally remodelled during the reign of Augustus and acquired a Roman character. The northern side of the complex was the most important, where behind the three-aisled basilica, the prytaneum, the temple of Augustus and Artemis and the odeion-bouleuterion were located. The other sides were defined by porticos apart from the western side, which was bordered by small individual buildings. Inside the agora’s open–air square there was a peripteral temple dedicated to the worship of Caesar and Rome. |
