At the end of the summer of 856 Petronas, the strategos (general) of Thrakesion, campaigned against the Arabs and their allies, the Paulicians. Through the emirate of Melitene he moved with his troops until the region of Arsamosata and Amida. Then he headed north, towards the capital of the Paulicians, Tephrike, sacking and destroying the city’s suburbs. |

In February 782 the Arabs invaded Asia Minor under Hārūn ar-Rashīd. Their main force advanced up to Bithynia, where it was surrounded by the Byzantine army. However, the betrayal of general Tatzates allowed the Arabs to capture three high-ranking Byzantine dignitaries. To release them the empress Eirene was forced to sign a peace treaty. On the 11th of June 806, the Arab caliph Hārūn ar-Rashīd campaigned against Cappadocia, in charge of a large army. He captured Tyana, Andrasos, Malakopea, Sideropalos, Kyzistra, Herakleia and Thebasa. These victories eventually forced the emperor Nikephoros I to sign an unfavourable for the Byzantines peace treaty with the Arabs which, however, he violated later. |

On the 5th of April 838 the caliph al-Mu’tasim campaigned against the Byzantine dominions of Asia Minor. On 22nd July part of his troops defeated Emperor Theophilos in Dazimon and after that the unified Arab army destroyed Ankara and besieged Amorion, which was conquered and destroyed around mid-August. Then the Arabs returned to their territories. |

In the spring of 859 the young emperor Michael III and Caesar Vardas, in charge of strong Byzantine military forces, led a successful campaign against the Arabs in the region of Euphrates. During this campaign, the Byzantines reached the fort of Samosata, which, however, failed to seize. |

Between March and April of 837 the emperor Theophilos campaigned against the Arabs in charge of a large army. Initially he conquered Sozopetra, which he plundered and destroyed, whereas later he conquered and burned down Arsamosata. Then he moved towards the north, pillaging the suburbs of Melitene. After the completion of the campaign and with a great number of prisoners and much plunder, Theophilos returned to Constantinople, where he organized an illustrious triumph. |
