From around 213 BC onwards, there was a civil war in Parthia between king Vologases VI and his brother, Artabanus IV. Taking advantage of the situation and trying to imitate Alexander the Great, emperor Caracalla campaigned against Parthia and Armenia. The Ionian War (412-404 BC) was the joint attempt of Persians, Spartans and Ionian Greeks to disband the Delian League, which had been hurt in the destructive Sicilian Expedition. However, the final victory of the allied forces enabled the Persians to recapture Asia Minor, which they had lost in 479 BC. |

The second Mithridatic War lasted from 83 to 81 BC. Contrary to the peace of Dardanus, which concluded the first Mithidatic War, Mithridates VI held on to a part of Cappadocia. This gave an opportunity to Lucius Licinius Murena, who had been left as governor of Asia by Sulla, to attack the king of Pontus. Eager for an easy triumph Murena attacked Mithridates. The war, however, went badly for the Romans and in 81 BC Sulla ordered Murena to desist from attacking a friend and ally of Rome. |

The Third Mithridatic war lasted between 74 and 63 BC. It was fought in Asia Minor, Pontus and Armenia and ended with the suicide of Mithridates. The Roman campaigns were conducted first by Lucullus and then by Pompey. |
