SUMMARY
The earliest references to a bandon and a doukas of Palaiomatzouka date to the early 15th century; previously, until 1384 at least, the area of Palaiomatzouka is mentioned as a village of the bandon of Matzouka. It appears, therefore, that the bandon of Palaiomatzouka emerged from a later division of the bandon of Matzouka and that the formation of another bandon at the south fringes of the Empire of Trebizond aimed at providing for the better organization of border defences. |
