1. Bishopric of Telmessos

Telmessos / Makre was a Lycian episcopal see under the metropolis of Myra and the Patriarchate of Constantinople. Moreover, the name bishopric of Makre prevailed after 879. The first known bishop was Ilarios, reported in 375 in letters of Basil the Great.1 Four bishops of Telmessos / Makre are known in total.

The bishopric was represented in the third Ecumenical Council of 431 in Ephesos and the fourth Ecumenical Council of 451 in Chalcedon, as well as in the council of 879 in Constantinople, which restored Patriarch Photios (858-867, 877-886). According to the notitia episcopatuum, the bishopric was ranked second among the bishoprics of the metropolis of Myra.

The disorder caused by the successive Türkmen conquests in Lycia in the 14th century probably led to the union of the bishopric with neighbouring Lebissos. However, the bishopric survived even after the fall of the city to the emirate of Menteshe, until the Ottoman period.
