Battle at Bathys Ryax, 872/8 (31/1/2006 v.1) Μάχη στον Βαθύ Ρύακα, 872/8 (14/10/2005 v.1)

In 872 (or, according to other scholars, in 878) the forces of Chrysocheir, leader of the Paulicians, clashed with the Byzantines during a battle given at Vathys Ryax, northern Cappadocia, and fled in disorder. The Byzantines chased them to the northeast as far as a hill called Konstantinou Bounos near Sebasteia, and they killed Chrysocheir along with lots of his soldiers.

Battle at Kopidnadon, 788 (31/1/2006 v.1) Μάχη στο Κοπίδναδον, 788 (14/10/2005 v.1)

On September 788, the Arabs invaded Asia Minor. The invaders clashed with the Byzantine troops from the themes of Anatolikon and of Opsikion in a battle near Kopidnadon (probably at Podandos of Cappadocia). The battle ended victoriously for the Arabs. The Byzantines were defeated with heavy losses, and tourmarches Diogenes, official of the theme of Anatolikon, was killed.

The battle at Sardis took place on May 743 between the army of the fallen emperor Constantine V (741-775) and the forces of the iconodule usurper Artabasdos. The outcome of the battle was victorious for Constantine and marked the beginning of the end for the regime of Artabasdos, who had temporarily occupied Constantinople.

On November 8, 960 a battle was joined at the narrow passes of Andrasus in Cilicia; the battle was fought between the forces of the domestikos ton Scholon of the West Leo Phokas, and the troops of Sayf ad-Dawlah, emir of Aleppo. The engagement resulted in an overwhelming defeat of the Arabs; the Byzantines annihilated most of the enemy forces, while the emir himself barely managed to escape.

Battle of Dazimon, 838

Battle of Dazimon, 838 (31/1/2006 v.1) Μάχη Δαζιμώνος, 838 (14/10/2005 v.1)

The Battle of Dazimon took place on July 22, 838 between the expeditionary forces of the Arab general Afshin and the troops of emperor Theophilos. Notwithstanding the initial success during the fight, the Byzantines were defeated in the end and took flight, while emperor Theophilos himself barely managed to escape the battlefield.

In the summer of 1243, the army of the Mongol General Baydju Noyon engaged in battle with the troops of the Sultan of Iconion Kaykhusraw II (1236-1245) in Köşe Dağ (Chmankatuk). The Seljuks were defeated. Their Sultan escaped from the scene of battle, later becoming a Mongol vassal.

On September 3, 863 the military forces of the emir of Melitene Amr al-Aqta joined battle with those of Petronas, strategos of the theme of Thrakesion in a place called Poson, close to the Lalakaon River. The Arab army, surrounded by the Byzantines, was decimated and Amr al-Aqta was killed. This Byzantine victory is an important turning point for the dominance over Asia Minor.

The battle of Mantzikert took place on the 26th of August 1071 and was the most decisive encounter of the clash between Byzantium and the Seljuks. The defeat of the Byzantines meant the crush of Byzantine army and the captivity of the emperor Romanos IV Diogenes, whereas in the long run it caused a range of economic and political problems in the Byzantine provinces of Asia Minor.
