The need of new metal-producing areas, in combination with the increased population in the mountainous region of Chaldia, resulted in the frequent migrations of metal-workers. Migration increased due to the exhaustion of the mines' reserves and the continuation of deforestation resulting from systematic woodcutting for the production of the timber and coal needed in the mining production. |

In the region of the Pontus, which was rich in ores, with the mineral deposits of argentiferous lead being the most important one, many mines operated. The greatest part of ores was concentrated at Chaldia. Its capital, Argyroupolis, developed into a centre of metallurgy which controlled the mining inside and outside the region’s borders.
