Byzantine Amisos was a coastal city of the Helenopontos province, between Trebizond and Sinope. It was an episcopal see, an important harbour and market, a fortress and the seat of military and administrative officials of the theme of Armeniakon. It was sacked by the Arabs in the 9th century.
