ΠΕΡΙΛΗΨΗ
The armies of Armenia and the East, as well as the tagmata of the imperial guard, were stationed in Asia Minor in order to protect Constantinople from Arab invasions. The themata had evolved, from the 8th century onward, and proven more effective, however, they were later devitalised during the 10th century, and had ceased to exist at the end of the 11th century. The army of the tagmata had prevailed, making possible the territorial recoveries of the 10th century; however, it was not able to resist the advances of the Turkish invaders due to civil strife. Nevertheless, this army managed to secure the Byzantine presence in the Western Asia Minor for almost two centuries after the Turks had captured this area. |
