Greek enlightenment in Southern Russia was a significant part of the overall enlightenment movement in the Hellenic world of the 18th - early 19th century. Its most important members were the prelates Evgenios Voulgaris and Nikiforos Theotokis, who furthemore were proponents of a much more tolerant attitude vis-a-vis the religious sect of the Old Believers. Within the framework of Greek diaspora at the Danubian cities in Romania (Brăila, Galaţi), an especially vivid publishing activity was developed during the second half of the 19th century, especially from the 1870s until 1900. Dozens of books were published, mainly communal and school regulations, speeches and literary texts. As an organization it can be placed within the more general historical movement of secret societies which blossomed at the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th century, with all the particular characteristics which defined its structure, aims and importance. |
