Born into the aristocratic family of Raoul. In the years of John III Vatatzes (1222-1254), in the Empire of Nicaea, he held the title of protovestiarios. In 1242 he participated in the first campaign of the emperor against the sovereign of Thessaloniki, John Angelos, while in 1252 he participated actively in the war against the despot of Epirus, Michael II Doukas. In 1256 the new emperor, Theodore II Laskaris deposed Alexios from his office. He died c. 1258. |

An illustrious member of the Doranites aristocratic family from Trepizond. Constantine Doranites’ activity should be viewed within the context of the civil strife that disrupted the Empire of Trebizond in the 14th century. During the period of the reign of emperor Michael Grand Komnenos he was granted the dignity of protovestiarios. He revolted against Alexios III Grand Komnenos without any success, as the kephalatikeuon of the Limnia. |

Illos the Isaurian first assumed an official post in Constantinople in 474. He then moved up the hierarchy while he changed sides more than once between the Emperor Zeno and various usurpers of the throne. Illos was supported by notable Roman officials and influential friends. In 481/2 he was removed to Antioch, where he roused a revolt in the provinces of the Diocese of Oriens, which was immediately suppressed in 484, as well as in Isauria, where he later escaped, which was suppressed in 488.... |

Karbeas was born around the early 9th century. At a young age, he served in the Byzantine army. In 843-844 he fled to the Arabs of Melitene in order to escape from the persecutions against the Paulicians launched by Empress Theodora. He organised the Paulician state with its capital Tephrike, the city he founded in the mid-9th century, while in 856 and 859 he repelled Byzantine attacks against his territory. Karbeas launched several raids against the Byzantines. He died in Tephrike in 863. |
